These course descriptions listed below provide a brief synopsis of what the prospective student can expect from a class.
Introduction to Gemstone Identification
The objective of this two-day course is to provide a foundation of awareness in gemstone identification. The course aims to do so with practical hand's-on training using a refractometer, LW/SW fluorescence, 10X loupe, 60X binocular microscope, classroom handouts as means of differentiating between stones. The course will also cover key differences in physical properties of natural vs. synthetic gemstones. It is an intensive course that is approximately 10+ contact hours. All students who successfully complete this course will receive a Certificate of Completion.

Gemstone Grading & Identification Course
Our signature course dedicated to teaching gemstones, this class focuses on building the skill of identification and gemstone evaluation. The four-day class is an expanded version of the 101 class that focuses on the big three (Ruby, Emerald and Sapphire) while equipping the student with the an ability to accurately identify any gemstone. Treatments, enhancements and synthetics are all included in the more than 400 sample stones available to participants of this class. It is an intensive course that is approximately 20+ contact hours. All students who successfully complete this course will receive a Certificate of Completion.

Advanced Gemstone Grading & Identification Course
This course is dedicated to the advancement of color science in the jewelry industry. The curriculum explores the need for accurate color science terminology for gemstones and introduces the student to the Munsell Color Order System. Lab time centers on learning proper terminology and will allow students ample opportunities to use The World of Color to grade gemstones and relate this system to value in the marketplace. The curriculum explores the many challenges to consistent color assessment and offers numerous techniques for standardized, repeatable results. All students who successfully complete this course will receive a Certificate of Completion.

Advanced Sapphire Identification
This advanced course delves into the topic of enhancement and origin analysis. Students work hands on with the instructor on stone sets designed to differentiate the internal features of enhanced and unenhanced sapphire. Along with the laboratory's stone library, PGSL opens their image bank to reveal patterns in internal features from various geographic origins. All students who successfully complete this course will receive a Certificate of Completion.

Advanced Emerald Identification
This advanced course delves into the topic of enhancement and origin analysis in emerald. Students work hands on with the instructor on stone sets designed to differentiate the internal features of enhanced and unenhanced emerald. Determining the amount of treatment is key to valuing an emerald and the laboratory gives you the rules for making this determination. Along with the laboratory's stone library, PGSL opens their image bank to reveal patterns in internal features from various geographic origins.
